The story of ‘Roary’
Holidaying in Newquay for Tracy’s 30th birthday, I was looking to replace my Mercedes CLC with a car I had previously come from; a three litre Jaguar S-Type.
I had my head and heart set on a facelift Jaguar S-Type in black with the XS body kit and Mercury wheels.
My boss, the MD of the car dealer I previously worked for in Lincolnshire had this exact combination and I remember the first time I saw it roll onto the carpark with a real grace and presence, I caught the Jaguar bug.
On the way home to Staffordshire we took a detour to see a low mileage 3.0 XS S-Type in black I’d seen on Autotrader at a dealer in Surrey, however I couldn’t help but notice the 4.2 Supercharged V8 ‘R’ he had tucked away in another unit.
As clear as day I remember the dealer saying to me with a smile on his face…
“take the three litre for a spin then take the ‘R’ for a drive, but wait until you’ve past the first corner before you put your foot down“
… I knew I was in for a treat.
So I took the 3 litre for a spin…. I don’t remember much about that drive other than eagerly awaiting the drive in the ‘R’ I’d just fallen in love with.
So I took the ‘R’ for a drive and heeded his advice, I got past the first corner, I planted my foot and had an instant smile on my face, the power was like nothing I had experienced before and I was really impressed with the way it cornered.
A deal was struck, I paid the money (£6,500) and drove the car home with Tracy following in the Merc.
Ten years later I’ve done approximately 30,000 miles in the car, we’ve been on many holidays and to many shows and I still own the car today.
